Thanks to the real estate crisis and the considerable drop in the number of new houses being constructed in the United States, the fact that the average age for houses is increasing is not much of a surprise. As a result, the number of new hardwood floors being installed drops as well, while more and more home owners consider refinishing them instead, to get their shine back. There are cases where hardwood floors are hidden, having carpets placed on top and remaining this way for a long time. To get their looks back, a professional is needed, one that can take that old floor and make it look great again.
As long as they’re well maintained and cared for, hardwood floors can remain in great shape for a very long time. This type of flooring material is easily damaged through scratches, which show up when small particles are walked upon. In order to make sure these particles are not a problem for your floor, you need to clean them. As long as you do that regularly, you minimize the chances of damage. One other element of the maintenance process is refinishing, something that should be done every few years. When a floor is not maintained properly and it wears out unevenly, they get gouges and become unsound structurally if not fixed. No matter what kind of restoration is needed, there are a lot of options available for refinishing. As long as the finish is a bit dull or there are some scratches that are light, one can fix the problem by applying a new urethane coating, after removing the old one. The entire process is easy and it doesn’t leave a big mess in your house, not to mention that it can be done with low VOC coating, which is water based and doesn’t give out a lot of odorous fumes. That’s not always the case though, as there are situations when the finish is so worn out that the wood is left unprotected and exposed. When that happens, the refinishing process is a bit more complex and it includes sanding the floor, in order to take out the urethane layer, as well as a re-staining of the wooden floor, to give it a nice color again. Once that’s done, another layer of urethane is applied. There are cases that are even more severe, where the wooden floor suffers from serious damage. There are areas of the floor that get damaged faster, because of a number of things, including water spills or higher foot traffic. It doesn’t mean that the entire floor needs to be replaced though. You just have to replace the area that can’t be refinished and leave the rest like it is. Once you replace what can’t be salvaged, you stain the floor entirely, so everything matches in color once again. A project like this can be a bit pricey, but it’s still a better option than having to change the entire floor. www.gulvafslibning.co
